FAQs

What cleaning products do you recommend for cleaning my mirror?

Our mirrors are a high-quality product made in Australia.. Please care for them as you would care for a piece of fine furniture:

Cleaning the Frame:
Dust frames with soft cloth or feather duster

Clean with soft cloth only, using a light touch.  ·

Wipe gently.

Please DO NOT use any household cleaner or solvent on the frames. Should a cleaner or solvent come in contact with frame, wipe off immediately with damp cloth. If left on frame, solvent may damage the finish.

Cleaning Your Mirror:

Please avoid household glass cleaners, as they tend to eat away at the silvering of your mirror and will unfortunately prematurely age your mirror.

At Mostly Mirrors, we recommend the use of  “Super Clear Streak Free Glass Cleaner”. It contains no ammonia and silicone, is ideal for mirrors and tinted glass. The “Super Clear Streak Free Glass Cleaner” is available in store now.

If you would like us to mail a can to you, please contact us for more information. Alternatively it can be purchased from our showroom.

Note: Australia Post do not accept this item as it is a flammable product, however we can send this with our nominated courier company

What benefits are there for installing a mirror?

Mirrors can enhance any room as they add a touch of your unique style and complement your décor. Mirrors can also:
• Reflect a view
• Lighten the mood of a room
• Create an illusion of more space (for example, in a small bathroom)
• Add elegance and style
• Make a dark room appear lighter

Any advice before I visit your store?

We always recommend the ‘newspaper test’ where you stick together pieces of newspaper and then sticky-tape or blue-tack this to the wall you intend to have your mirror installed. This will give you an idea of the appropriate size to suit your interior. Whilst the newspaper is on the wall, you can fold in the sides or top/bottom to decrease the size, or alternatively add more pieces of newspaper to increase the size. When you are satisfied, measure from edge to edge and please bring these dimensions with you.

If you do not have tape measure, bring the newspaper into our store and we can measure it for you.

If you are able to bring in photos (or email us beforehand) we can also suggest suitable mirrors based on our many years of expertise and design skills

What is a Polished Edge?
A polished edge creates a small chamfer on the top and bottom of the glass giving a smooth and safe edge

What is a Bevelled Edge?
We can supply bevels from 10 to 30mm. A bevelled edge sees a tapering of the glass from the desired width in, out to the edge of the glass.

What thickness mirror should I get?
Generally speaking the best quality mirror can be found in 6mm silver, however, size, weight and price will all play a factor in your decision. ('Silver' is the industry term for mirror simply referring to the silver backing) As a general rule mirrors over 1 square meter (sqm) should be in 6mm silver, mirrors under this size may be made from 4mm silver. For a variety of reasons you may want to break this rule.
For example:-
• A tall, thin mirror - 1600 x 500 while under 1sqm would tend to bow with 4mm silver giving a distorted reflection.
• 4mm silver is cheaper than 6mm.
• A 30mm bevel (see above) requires 6mm silver.
• 1sqm on 4mm is 10kg while on 6mm it weighs 15kg.
Please feel free to contact us for the best mirror to use for your purpose.

What is Laminated Safety Mirror?
Laminated Safety Mirror is quite simply 4mm glass laminated together with a PVB layer. Laminated Safety Mirror, when struck with sufficient force, will break into shards but the pane will stay intact via the laminate leaving no sharp edges exposed. Apart from the obvious safety benefits, this type of mirror also offers a barrier to the elements even after it has been broken.

What is a "Toughened" Mirror?
Toughened Mirror, or 'Tempered Mirror, has been baked at tremendous temperatures (approximately 650° Celsius) and then cooled quickly (aproximately 260° Celsius), making the mirror 4 to 5 times stronger than normal mirror of the same thickness. The process of toughening the mirror creates compression on the surfaces and tension in the centre. Toughened mirror conforms to the Australian Standard for use in Buildings and is commonly found in Bathroom, Balustrade and mirror table tops. When Toughened Glass is struck with sufficient force as to cause a breakage, the glass shatters into tiny, relatively harmless pieces
